My passion for design started when I was a teenager, full of angst and overflowing thoughts. I wanted to share them with strangers on the internet as any teenager would (obviously!!!), so I created a blog. Of course, I was not only going to share my mishaps — I wanted my blog to look cool too. That's when I started creating designs on the internet, and the rest was pretty much history.
A few years later, here I am with nine years of ✨real✨ experience (but with less angst!) to back me up as a user interface designer.
I am currently a remote UI designer 🎨👩🏻💻 at Melewi, a Singapore-based web and product design studio. With them, I was able to work closely with clients in every stage of the design process — from discovery to handoff.
One of the most significant projects I did was optimising and redesigning the existing interface of the McDelivery app 📱, which was launched across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Over the years, I've localised and iterated the experience globally, significantly increasing their revenue. I've also helped build products like GuavaPass, now acquired by ClassPass, from the ground up. GuavaPass provided access to unlimited classes at premium fitness studios across Asia and the Middle East.
I also do freelance work as a UI/UX designer for an Albury-based digital growth agency 📈, Digital Marketer Bee. I help their clients grow by researching their users and consumer target audiences and developing designs that result in seamless experiences. I've helped launch websites for Bill Tilley MLA, Adapta Ramps, and KDEC Solar and Electrical Power.
I've done numerous projects from different industries like consumer applications, FinTech, cryptocurrency, public services, and health services. This has given me the opportunity and ability to solve a great variety of design problems.
My portfolio consists of selected projects I've done throughout my design career. It combines my old (like 2014-2018 old!) and new projects so you'd see how I have progressed as a designer. The five main projects — Meraki Produce, Absolute Raw, Bill Tilley, Legend, and the Sports Website Mockup — have case studies with them which you can read to learn more about my design thinking. They're the most recent ones and the projects where I did great.
The project that I enjoyed doing the most was Meraki Produce's eCommerce website. They gave me all the creative freedom and allowed me to just have fun with it. Most of the projects I did in the past were on the serious side (FinTech, Cryptos, and all those big corp stuff!), so this one was a nice and exciting change. (When the designs were presented to the client, they may or may not have shed some tears because of happiness!)
So… what was it about this job opportunity that made me apply?
I've always wanted my designs to make an impact and create a difference - no matter how small or big it is. I want to help improve lives. Growing up in the Philippines, I've seen how life can be difficult and unfair for people who don't have the privileges and if through this I would be able to help people, count me in!
On top of what I just mentioned, I’m also looking forward to the vast amount of creative freedom and license to explore new ideas that I'm going to have 🤞🏻hopefully🤞🏻. I've been trying to find the perfect opportunity to put my heart and effort into, and as much as possible, I didn't want to be stuck designing just one thing. I want to create useful designs and experiences that would still tap into different areas. So I was very excited to learn about this opportunity, and I know I would be able to help <Company X>'s design team.
I also love how <Company X> lives by its values - you walk the impact talk, as you said. It's essential for me that I get to work with people who actually care (PS. the 'be good allies' link on your about page doesn't work ☹️)
The remote working 👩🏻💻🏝 doesn't hurt either since that's what I've known ever since I entered the world of working adults.
Your new designer and teammate ✨hopefully✨,
Mary
